How to oil your scalp — the way your grandmother did

Before serums and salons, there was Sunday oil massage. The technique your grandmother used wasn't just tradition — most of it was good scalp practice. Here's how to do it properly.

Hands massaging oil into the scalp, unhurried

Chances are, if you grew up in an Indian household, someone — a grandmother, a mother, a masi — sat you down on a low stool at some point and worked oil into your scalp with their fingertips. It felt unhurried. It usually happened on a Sunday. And it worked, not because of any single ingredient, but because of the technique.

Warm the oil first

Pour a few drops into a small bowl or straight into your palms and rub your hands together until the oil feels warm, not hot. Warm oil spreads more easily through the hair and feels more pleasant on the scalp — this step alone changes how the massage feels.

Section, don't dump

Rather than pouring oil all at once, part your hair into four or five sections. Apply oil along each parting directly onto the scalp, section by section. This is what most of us remember as the actual ritual — the parting, the cool touch of oil on skin, the pause before the massage begins.

The massage technique

  • Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails — nails can irritate the scalp.
  • Work in small, firm circular motions, starting at the hairline and moving back toward the crown.
  • Spend extra time at the temples and the nape of the neck — areas that hold tension.
  • Keep the pressure firm but comfortable. This isn't meant to hurt.
  • Five to ten minutes is enough. Longer isn't automatically better.

Let it sit

Traditionally, the oil was left in for a few hours, or overnight with a light cloth over the pillow, and washed out the next morning. If overnight isn't practical, thirty minutes to an hour before you shampoo still lets the oil do its work on the scalp.

None of this needs to be elaborate. The version your grandmother practiced worked because it was simple, repeated, and unrushed — a few minutes given to the scalp on a regular day of the week, not a special occasion.
