Hard water and hair fall in Indian cities
Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Jaipur — most Indian cities run hard, mineral-heavy water through the taps. Here's what that does to your scalp, and how to work around it.
If you've moved cities in India — say, from Mumbai to Delhi, or Kolkata to Bengaluru — and noticed your hair fall got worse within a few months, it's rarely a coincidence. Groundwater across large parts of North and South India runs hard, meaning it carries a higher load of dissolved calcium and magnesium salts than your hair and scalp are used to.
What "hard water" actually means for your scalp
Hard water doesn't dissolve soap and shampoo as cleanly as soft water does. Instead of rinsing away, mineral deposits settle on the scalp and along the hair shaft. Over time this can leave the scalp feeling drier and more prone to buildup, and hair itself can start to feel rough, tangled, and duller — especially at the ends.
This isn't the same as a medical hair loss condition, and hard water alone doesn't explain every case of hair fall. But for a lot of people living in hard-water cities, it's one more thing working against an already-stressed scalp — alongside heat, pollution, and harsh shampoos.
Cities where this comes up often
- Delhi NCR — groundwater is widely reported as hard to very hard.
- Jaipur and much of Rajasthan — high mineral content is common.
- Chennai — coastal groundwater often runs hard, especially in summer.
- Bengaluru — borewell water in several localities tends to be hard.
If you're unsure about your own tap, most municipal water boards publish hardness data, and simple test strips are available online.
What tends to help
- A final rinse with filtered or RO water, if that's accessible to you.
- A clarifying wash every couple of weeks to clear mineral buildup.
- Oiling before you wash — a layer of oil on the scalp and lengths can reduce how much mineral residue clings directly to the hair shaft.
- Being gentler with heat styling on days when hair already feels rough from tap water.
None of this reverses hard water damage overnight, and no single product can undo what your local water supply is doing every wash day. What it can do is give your scalp and roots something to work with — nourishment and conditioning that hold up better between washes.
